Manhattan: What You Need to Know

Manhattan is the most densely populated borough out of the five which make up New York City. Not only that, but it is the oldest of the five as well. With 1.6 million people in a land area of 23 square miles, it is actually one of the most densely populated areas in the country and the entire world. Manhattan has the same borders as New York County and is home to Wall Street, the United Nations Headquarters, and the Empire State Building. It is also home to one of the greatest tragedies in the history of the U.S., the September 11th attacks which resulted in the collapse of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and the deaths of 2,996 people.

In the past ten years, there has been a 3.2% increase in the population of Manhattan, with over 71,000 people per square mile. The Department of City Planning believes that this increase will continue and that there will be 289,000 more people in Manhattan by 2030. The breakdown of demographics are as follows: White (48%), African-American (12.9%), Asian (11.2%), and Hispanic (25.4%). In the Upper East Side of Manhattan, there is one of the largest concentrations of extreme wealth in the country, with the highest average per capita income of any county. Regardless, approximately 20% of the population lives below the poverty line.

How safe is Manhattan? Are the crime rates increasing or decreasing? Manhattan has a history of crime, including the now infamous Al Capone and the development of the Mafia. During the Prohibition, there was a growing black market in the area in which the Mafia was heavily involved. In the 1960s and 1970s, the crime rates skyrocketed, jumping from 21.09 per 1,000 residents in 1960 to 103.66 per thousand in 1981. In 1960, there were 390 murders recorded in one year as compared to 2,262 murders recorded in 1990. Since that peak, however, crime rates of numerous violent crimes and property crimes have continued to decrease.
